Life Cycle Upgrade to Repair Heavily Travelled Truck Route

142nd Avenue E is a heavily travelled truck route in the Sumner Industrial Park, connecting several large industrial complexes to Highway 167. After 20 years of heavy truck traffic, the road was beginning to deteriorate. The City of Sumner enlisted KPG to provide engineering and construction services to grind and overlay approximately one and a half miles of a five lane road. Additionally, approximately 700 LF of road was completely removed and replaced with reinforced concrete pavement.

Work also included the replacement of ADA curb ramps, new valley gutters, utility lid replacements, and channelization. The challenges of the project were the coordination efforts involved to allow the project to run smoothly. With over 15,000 vehicles per day moving through the corridor, communicating with the local businesses and residents was key to a successful project. The exceptional project received the 2019 Best City Paving Award for Western Washington from the Washington Asphalt Pavement Association (WAPA) and the American Public Works Association(APWA-WA).
